The consequences that Ruoxi faced, which related to her love with the 4th prince or her mental health, were the result of her trampling on the 8th prince's affections for her. In the novel, the 8th prince made good preparations and arrangements to protect Ruoxi from being selected by the emperor and the malicious elements of the Forbidden City, yet due to her selfishness, she underestimated his love. She wasn't willing to be his consort, even though he only had two consorts. What's even more ridiculous was that he guaranteed to make her the empress when he ascended the throne, yet she thought it wasn't worthy of sacrifice simply because she knew the historical outcome! She knew that the 4thprince will become Qing WangDi and she don't want 8th to be killed by his brother. So she dealt her love by encouraging 8th not to desire to the throne, but unfortunately he didn't accept her proposal and looked for the way leading to be the Wangdi.
